Standing up for your kid is a moment every parent faces eventually. One dad from Nova Scotia, Canada, recently posted a video to his Facebook page this weekend because of an incident he witnessed at the movie section in a store, as a way to stand up for his son with Down syndrome.
Artist and dad Robb Scott overheard another father answer his son’s question about what Down syndrome is. Apparently, the dad told his son it is an illness of “not knowing anything.” Scott, whose own son has Down syndrome, didn’t initially say anything to the father and son at the time.
Like many of us, he realized what he should have said after the moment was over–but luckily, that doesn’t mean it’s too late. As a way to express his feelings regarding the incident, he went to Facebook to explain why the dad’s reaction was misinformed, and what it’s really like raising a son who has Down syndrome. What he said in his five minute video is beautiful and touching:
“Down syndrome is literally one of the most beautiful things that’s ever happened to my life… It’s not an illness. Down syndrome is the best thing that has ever happened to me, but I didn’t say that. I didn’t step up for my son and for other people with Down syndrome.”
This is important for me to say. Excuse my emotion.Kelly Macintosh-Scott.
