The Jewish Wizarding Family in ‘Harry Potter’ Is Hitting the Big Screen

Unless you are a super close reader of the “Harry Potter” series, you probably didn’t know there is a Jewish wizarding family in the book. Of course, I know these things only because I’m a huge nerd who read the books with a fine tooth comb.

Anthony Goldstein was a student (and very minor character) at Hogwarts during Harry’s time there–and his family will be featured in the first installment of the five-film series “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.” For fans, it’s a big deal, as it’s not only the first big-screen return to the world of “Harry Potter” in five years, but it’s the first time the Jewish family really gets any major attention.

The film features Porpentina Goldstein, played by Katherine Waterson. She and her sister Queenie take center stage alongside Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander. The good news? You’ll be able to see the film imminently, as it comes out in theaters today.
