This is the fourth post in our portrait series, Show & Tell, which features children ages 4-12 photographed with their favorite object.
Meet 7-year-old Samiha whose favorite and most beloved object is her family album created by her dad. It chronicles the story of all the people who came before her, and also tells her early life. She loves reliving the memories that make up her story, looking through old photos and letters as a reminder of her roots, and of the people she loves very much.
Since Samiha’s dad was adopted, and only later was introduced to his birth parents, their family tree is a bit complicated–and diverse, as her dad is Jewish and her mom is Hindu. Because of this, he wanted to help Samiha understand her background by creating a family album. In this way, she can honor her full self.
When she was younger, she and her family moved out West for a year; because of this, the album was put into storage, which made her feel like something was missing. Now that she’s back in the Hudson Valley, she loves being able to take it out again.
Thanks for sharing, Samiha.
