When it comes to humor, Jerry Seinfeld is kind of an expert. When it comes to what his kids find funny–and what he gets mad at, you may wonder. Given that his whole brand of humor revolves around being uptight and selfish, what kind of dad is he?
Well, apparently, he’s the kind of dad who once “lost his temper” with his now 16-year-old daughter Sascha (he also has two sons, Shepherd, 12, and Julian, 14), because she was watching “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” according to a recent interview with Mr. Porter. The 63-year-old said:
“The one time I really, really got upset was when my daughter was watching the Kardashians on her phone in her bed and I could not take that scene.”
He went on to explain how he’s offended by reality TV:
“I’m offended by reality television on many levels and that show of course is the premier example of reality television. These people are not doing anything interesting.”
It also seems his kids have a different sense of humor than he does—but did explain how he is good at getting his kids to open up and chat, even if he’s not over involved in their daily lives:
“I’m not that involved in their school stuff. I’m not involved in their social stuff. I am just always around them and I’m very good at drawing them out, you know?
I think some fathers struggle with, ‘My kid doesn’t want to talk to me,’ or, ‘I can’t get them to engage with me in conversations,’ especially as they get into the teen years. I’m always able to get that conversation going.”
That’s a good skill to have! It’s important, especially as kids grow up, to feel supported by their parents, instead of having to hide their true selves and feelings.
