Amy Schumer Took On Gun Enthusiasts in SNL Parody Commercial

It was a monumental weekend for the Jewish comedian Amy Schumer. She hosted “Saturday Night Live” (see hashtag: winning), while taking down gun enthusiasts at the same time.

Schumer is a known anti-gun activist, having spoken about her beliefs during an August press conference with Senator Chuck Schumer (who is also her cousin) and on “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart.

In an aptly titled skit called “Guns,” Schumer created a world where guns are extremely common, to the point of absurdity. For instance, a father presents a handgun to his infant, while teens play spin the bottle with a gun. At the end of the skit, the narrator ironically says, “They unite us, comfort us, bring us strength.” The icing on the cake is the ending tagline: “Guns. We’re here to stay.”

During the August press conference, Schumer stated why gun control should be more strict:

“These are not extreme ideas. No one wants to live in a country where a felon, the mentally ill or other dangerous people can get their hands on a gun with such ease.”

We’re glad for celebrities like Schumer, not just because she’s a sassy Jewish comedian, but because she uses humor as a way to teach and inspire others in order to make the world a safer place. For parents, the recent shootings are beyond scary, and using humor to raise awareness about the dangers of guns is actually pretty smart.
