Amy Schumer Calls Out Glamour Magazine for Including Her in ‘Plus Size’ Issue

Amy Schumer is not happy right now. According to Schumer, Glamour Magazine included her in their special “plus size” bonus issue in collaboration with Lane Bryant without her permission. She posted about her frustration on Instagram earlier today:

“I think there’s nothing wrong with being plus size. Beautiful healthy women. Plus size is considered size 16 in America. I go between a size 6 and an 8. @glamourmag put me in their plus size only issue without asking or letting me know and it doesn’t feel right to me.

Young girls seeing my body type thinking that is plus size? What are your thoughts? Mine are not cool glamour not glamourous.”

Of course, Glamour told PEOPLE that it was not their intention to offend the Jewish actress–if anything, they are inspired by her:

“First off, we love Amy, and our readers do too–which is why we featured her on the cover of Glamour last year. The cover line on this special edition–which is aimed at women size 12 and up–simply says “Women Who Inspire Us,” since we believe her passionate and vocal message of body positivity IS inspiring, as is the message of the many other women, of all sizes, featured. The edition did not describe her as plus-size. We are sorry if we offended her in any way.”

While the magazine may have not intended to offend Schumer, the entire concept of “plus size” seems ridiculous to me. Focusing on what size someone is defeats the entire purpose of body positivity–especially when the emphasis is only implying that you aren’t part of a desired group–which doesn’t send a positive or healthy message for women or girls anywhere. This is precisely why Schumer is upset–and that’s a good reason.

In the past, Schumer talked about her size in her acceptance speech at the 2015 Glamour Women of the Year Awards in June, stating:

“I’m probably like 160 lbs. right now, and I can catch a d— whenever I want. It’s not a problem. It’s not a problem.

I’m not going to apologize for who I am and I’m going to actually love the skin that I’m in. I’m not gonna be striving for some other version of myself.”

Well said.
