“Numi Numi”
Sung by Tanja Solnik
Hebrew lullaby tunes and themes parallel their Yiddish predecessors, minus the angst and pathos. In “Numi Numi,” Daddy’s out working, like the dad in “Shlof Mayn Kind.” But this Daddy’s coming home when the moon comes out–with a present. This sweet tune, like other songs collected in Palestine of the 1920s, echoes the hopes and dreams of the first generation of halutzim (pioneers) and their joys in hard work. Come to think of it, maybe “Numi Numi” could inspire my little ones to do some avodah (chores) around the house.
