Zlateh the Goat and Other Stories By Isaac Bashevis Singer
These are the stories, and the images, that defined the Jewish story for me as a kid. In many ways Singer‘s old-world town of Chelm–full as it is with fools and wisdom, goofy antics and funny mishaps–functions as the single greatest reference point for my own Jewish nostalgia. Singer’s first book for children was a masterpiece and no list like this could be complete without this book. No house should be either. It’s a great bedtime read-aloud!
