If you don’t know who Iris Apfel is, you should. She’s a legendary fashion icon, designer, and interior designer — and she just got a Barbie created in her liking. The awesome news was announced this past Wednesday by Mattel.
The Apfel Barbie was created in conjunction with the fashionista’s new book, Iris Apfel: Accidental Icon. Apfel, whose iconic look includes red lips and coke bottle glasses, joins other inspiring women whose likenesses have been made into Barbies, like director Ava DuVernay, ballerina Misty Copeland, and Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas.
The disappointing part? You won’t be able to actually buy the Apfel doll — but there will be a new line of dolls coming out later this year inspired by her incredible style.
Recently, Mattel received a lot of flak for one of the dolls in their “Shero” and “Inspiring Women,” collection, most notably surrounding their Frida Kahlo doll. Why? The doll did not include her famous unibrow or the artist’s wheelchair. Even worse, the Kahlo family also reportedly did not sign off on the doll. Oy.
But, hey, we can still be excited about this one. Team Iris all the way.
