Good news on the Disney front: Lin-Manuel Miranda is going to score the live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid.” He already co-wrote the score to “Moana” and is rumored to be the co-lead to the forthcoming “Mary Poppins Returns” movie.
He’ll be collaborating with iconic Disney composer, Alan Menken, who said, “For the live-action Little Mermaid, I’m writing additional songs with lyrics by Hamilton and Moana songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda.”
“Right now, it’s the guy who wears the ‘don’t mess it up’ hat. If I could sign a contract with that job title on it, that would be great! But that’s sort of where we are.
If this requires new music, I’m here for that, and if this requires me weighing in on who makes this thing, I’m here for that. If this requires me just saying, ‘That doesn’t look like it’s underwater,’ I’m even here for that! It’s going to be a huge challenge to not make it feel uncanny valley-ish.”
Apparently, according to the New York Times, Miranda even named his two-year-old son Sebastian after the crab in the classic 1989 Disney film. Sebastian doesn’t appear in the original fairy tale, but was a creation for the film. The movie’s songwriter, Howard Ashman, wrote the crab as a Jamaican Rastafarian crab, which is evident from the songs.
I wonder how minor characters like that will change–or be reflected–in the new movie.
