Ruth Bader Ginsburg isn’t called the “Notorious RBG” for no reason. The Supreme Court Justice has made huge strides for women over the course of her career (she’s been a justice for 23 years!). What many people don’t always realize is the fact that she is also a devoted mom and wife while making a difference in the world.
Of course, juggling motherhood and a career is never easy–and Ginsburg recently opened up about how motherhood helped change her general perspective on life. In a short animated video made by The Atlantic, Ginsburg describes how her husband’s flexibility and support for her career (he did a lot of the cooking) helped her be both a mom and career-driven woman.
She said:
“I think I had better balance, better sense of proportions of what matters. I felt each part of my life gave me respite from the other.
Having Jane gave me a better sense of what life is.”
This interview was conducted by Ryan Park for his story “What Ruth Bader Ginsburg Taught Me About Being a Stay-at-Home Dad.” In his story, he also quoted Ginsburg as saying that it’s impossible to “have it all” in any one given moment. She told Katie Couric in a recent interview:
“You can’t have it all all at once. Over my lifespan, I think I have had it all, but in given periods in time, things were rough. And if you have a caring life partner, you help the other person when that person needs it.”
Sounds about right. A person may seem like they “have it all,” but realistically, they probably don’t–under the surface, there are always feelings we don’t see someone struggle with–and while someone may have a great job right now, or a great family situation currently, that may not always be the case–or it may not be easy 100% of the time. Nothing is.
