Amy Schumer is unstoppable. She’s now going to play everyone’s favorite–and most iconic–blonde. Yes, she’s going to play Barbie. The Jewish comedian will star and rework the script for the live action film “Barbie,” which puts a much-needed modern spin on the classic doll.
According to Hollywood Reporter, the film focuses on Barbie, who realizes she doesn’t fit into the glittery Barbie world that she had grown up in. After being exiled from her homeland, Barbie goes on a journey of self-discovery, and has to figure out where her place is in the real world.
Apparently, the film got a thumbs up from Mattel, the toy brand behind Barbie, according to Deadline. This film will be billed as a family comedy, as it is scheduled to have a PG rating–and Sony Pictures confirmed the film will be out in summer 2018. Schumer and her sister Kim Caramele will rewrite a script originally created by Hilary Winston.
I can’t wait to see the film–and see what Schumer brings to the role. It’s exciting to see Barbie billed as being more nuanced and complicated than the sugar-coated world she exists in–and that’s a powerful lesson to teach young girls. Our journey to self-discovery and identity is always important.
