I’m always on the lookout for new music. This is why I was excited when I discovered the song “I Want to Hear Somebody Pray,” which was covered by the Jewish American band Nefesh Mountain. It’s originally a Caribbean song that the band fell in love with.
The founders of the band are a husband and wife team: Eric Lindberg and Doni Zasloff who are also joined by Sam Bush, Mark Schatz, Scott Vestal, Rob Ickes, and Gary Oleyar. They describe themselves as “pioneers of a new sound where Jewish Sprit and Soul meet with Bluegrass and Old-time musical traditions.”
The song itself is catchy and upbeat–the band did apparently add some original lyrics and melodies to the original, and say they’re “singing this spiritual from both a Jewish and universal perspective with the addition of some original lyrics and melodies. This song speaks to our need as a people to hear and listen to the voices and truths of not only ourselves, but the ones around us as well.”
