Purim Cocktails

On Purim it’s a mitzvah (commandment, or good deed) to get good and drunk. In fact, the rabbis endorse drinking until you can’t tell the difference between the words Blessed Be Mordechai, and Cursed Be Haman. Here at Kveller we are enthusiastic about fulfilling this mitzvah, and we’ve come up with a couple of cocktails that will help you achieve your sloshy goals. Both drinks are tasty, sweet, and sure to get you slurring your Purim characters in no time.

The Lemon Spiel

¾ oz lemon vodka

1 oz pomegranate juice

¼ oz spiced rum

4 oz prosecco (if you can’t find kosher prosecco you can use white wine with a little seltzer in it, or use Moscato in a pinch)

Pour the vodka, pomegranate juice, and spiced rum into a cocktail shaker along with a few ice cubes. Shake. Rim a champagne flute or cocktail glass with sugar. Carefully pour the mixture from the shaker into the glass. Top with prosecco, and garnish with lemon.

Haman’s Brew

1 oz bourbon

1 oz simple syrup

juice of half a lemon

seltzer

2 sage leaves

Combine the bourbon, simple syrup, lemon juice, and one sage leaf in a cocktail shaker. Shake with a couple of ice cubes, and then strain into a lowball glass. Add a few more ice cubes, and top with seltzer. Garnish with remaining sage leaf.
