Today is an incredibly devastating day for Facebook COO (and women’s advocate) Sheryl Sandberg. She’s mourning her late husband on what would have been his 48th birthday today, 22 weeks after his death. Our hearts are heavy for her–we wish no one should ever have to prematurely mourn their spouses so suddenly.

In a Facebook post, Sandberg writes a heartfelt piece about her beloved husband, and the family he has tragically left behind. It’s not hard to see what a strong and inspirational woman she is, as she makes a point to say how she is celebrating his life today–and how it’s important for her to use his example as a source of inspiration:
“Still today, in keeping with the promise I made to myself to try to kick the s*** out of Option B, I join many others in celebrating Dave’s life. And I thank my family and friends from the bottom of my heart for carrying me and my children through these brutal months and for helping us keep his memory alive.
So many people, even some I did not know, have told me how he helped them start their career or encouraged them to reach higher or do better. So many people say that when they have a decision to make, they ask themselves, “What would Dave have done?” So many people talk about how even in death he inspires them to live better lives.”
What an incredible way to honor his life, while also healing from his death.
