Eric Strong’s son has the coolest bed ever, all thanks to his dad. (Sorry, race car beds.)
Instead of spending thousands of dollars on an ornate theme bed, you could just build one yourself, which is exactly what Eric Strong did for his son. Having promised his son “the coolest bed ever,” he designed the most awesome kids’ bed via IKEA: a lofted mattress with a ball-and-pulley play system, a secret room with LED lights, and a trap door escape (you know, just in case).

So, how does it work? Using primarily IKEA pieces, it involves The Kura bed, the Trofast storage system, and the Besta shelves. Strong used two of the Kura beds (one for siding), and spent about one to two hours a night over the course of two months devising a plan for this brilliant play-house-bed. (Of course, some random supplies, like plywood and whiteboard covering, came from other stores.) In the end, the bed cost $850 to make. Not bad.
We still can’t get over how Strong didn’t write out plans before he started building the bed, drawing much of his inspiration from an online community of IKEA hackers. Because of this, he believes anyone can build a cool bed.
