Remember my earlier post? About the mezuzah I’m having designed for the Emmys? Remember my comment about, “No blood diamonds please”?

Well, my mezuzah, I have been informed, will have a small diamond. But it will be perfectly… kosher! Here’s why. Turns out it’s not just left-wing social activist hippies like me who care about this stuff.

In April 2003, congress and President Bush began requiring that all US diamond retailers only buy diamonds from manufacturers who have documentation stating that their diamonds were obtained through legitimate channels. US Customs Service actively enforces it as diamonds enter our ports. It’s called the “Kimberley Process.” It is an industry-wide standard of tracking and certification which all legitimate jewelers go by.

Every supplier North American Jewelers buys diamonds from has the following statement on every document that accompanies the goods: “The diamonds herein consumed have been purchased from legitimate sources not involved in funding conflict and in compliance with United Nations resolutions. The seller hereby guarantees that these diamonds are conflict free based on personal knowledge an/or written guarantees provided by the supplier of these diamonds.” This statement appears on every one of their invoices to their customers as well. They do not and would not ever buy any diamonds without this assurance.

So that’s that. In case you were wondering.
