How to Recite The Four Questions (Ma Nishtanah)

plagues-NL

Passover is generally a big deal for families with children. It’s a home-centric holiday to begin with — not like Yom Kippur, say, when many Jews to go to synagogue — and kids have a prominent role to play in the family seder: asking the Four Questions.

This honor of asking the Four Questions is typically reserved for the youngest (capable) person at the seder, though many families get around potential shyness by having all the kids (or even all the guests) recite or sing the Four Questions together. (Note that the first phrase — a question beginning with “Ma nishtana” — is recited before each question.)

To help your little one (or ones) along, here’s a breakdown of the questions in Hebrew, in transliteration, and in English. Happy Passover!

Ma nishtanah halailah hazeh mikol haleilot?
Why is this night different from all other nights?

1st Question:

Shebchol haleilot anu okhlin hametz umatzah; halailah hazeh, kuloh matzah.
On all other nights we eat leavened products and matzah, and on this night only matzah.

2nd Question:

Shebchol haleilot anu okhlin sh’ar y’rakot; halailah hazeh, maror.
On all other nights we eat all vegetables, and on this night only bitter herbs.

3rd Question:

Shebkhol haleilot ein anu matbilin afilu pa’am ehat; halailah hazeh, shtei f’amim.
On all other nights, we don’t dip our food even once, and on this night we dip twice.

4th Question:

Shebchol haleilot anu okhlin bein yoshvin uvein m’subin; halailah hazeh, kulanu m’subin.
On all other nights we eat sitting or reclining, and on this night we only recline.
