I was on The Queen Latifah show yesterday. I have been a fan of hers for years, and I was very excited to be a guest, especially when I found out that Earvin “Magic” Johnson was going to be a guest too!
The hair and make-up artists who turn me into Amy Farrah Fowler weekly on “The Big Bang Theory” got to make me up all glam for this appearance and that was great fun. Doing my hair and make-up at Big Bang typically takes about 30 minutes total since I barely wear much make-up at all as Amy and straightening my naturally wavy-ish hair doesn’t take that long either. This appearance was a chance for the ladies who normally don’t get to do much fun stuff with me to have fun. And they sure did! I was very happy with the “different” look they gave me and they were tickled to be able to glam me up.
I had stylist Ali help me select a “casual” outfit but I think I always end up looking kind of dressed up since I don’t wear pants or jeans… oh well. We chose a simple J. Crew pencil skirt, my favorite Boden 3/4 T-shirt, and a fun necklace that I got as SWAG last year before the Emmys. And of course, tall heels.
I met Magic Johnson backstage and he was very kind and sweet, in addition to being extremely tall and (I think) very handsome. I actually met him when I was about 17 at a charity event, so now I have not one but two pictures of me with Magic Johnson! I think this more recent one is more awesome than the one when I was 17 because in this one I am wearing a “Jewlicious” T-shirt.
A producer is responsible for talking to guests before the show to see what they want to and can talk about. This producer had a lovely British accent and it turns out he’s from Liverpool and he’s Jewish! Wha!? I know. Awesome. Anyway, he went over the planned topics of discussion and Queen Latifah and I ended up talking a lot about how I choose what to write about (Jewish aspects of divorce in a four-part series for Kveller) and what I choose not to write about (my deepest emotions, desires, and what I ate for breakfast). She has a very finely tuned sense of privacy and this was a great topic for us to talk about.
The producer (the Jewish Liverpoolian) had also read my Kveller blog about me hiring Operation Organization as my personal organizers and we talked about that too. They wanted me to talk about “real mom” things and although most moms don’t hire personal organizers, I think I went about it in the most “real” way I could. The audience didn’t seem to think I was as funny as I thought I was, but oh well. Sometimes it happens that way in life, right?
